Since we are in the season of giving, we have thought of different ways to give to others and share the love of Jesus this season. One of our favorite things we did was to “fill a stocking” for a local homeless shelter. I just loved seeing my kids eyes open to the reality that there are others in this world who have very little and to see how excited they were to bless someone with things that we so often take for granted. I pray that through projects like this my kids would start to have a sense of compassion for others and to serve others before themselves and to truly love and help those who may be in need. If you feel led and want to teach your kids to care for and help those in need this holiday here is a great way to bless someone…
We went to target and gathered up some things, here is what we filled our stockings with…
Candy was one of the things requested from the shelter because it is a treat that they don’t normally get and socks that they can actually wear and that can be worn by both male and female. Toiletries were recommended as well.
We also put in $5 gift cards to McDonald’s for a hot meal when needed.
Along with a special note to share Jesus’ love for us.
If you would like to make these, its easy, just get a pair of socks and roll one of the pairs and put it inside the other and just start filling them up with goodies.
Parents, you will need to help the little ones fill the stockings because its a little hard to push everything down to the bottom of the sock but a lot will fit if you put it in right. So help with this part.
When you are finished filling the stocking, tie a cute bow at the top and they are ready to be delivered to a shelter or carried in your car to give as needed.
We prayed for the people who would be receiving our stockings, that they would be so blessed by them and that they would find warm places to sleep and food in their tummy. But most of all that they would know Jesus and know that they are loved.
But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.
